St. Luke’s Health - Memorial Hospital in Livingston, TX,  is located just off Highway 59 south. The 66-bed hospital provides more than 60,000 patient services each year, with half of those services being offered in the Level 4 Trauma-Designated Emergency Department. Services offered include, Orthopedic care, Women’s Services, and a state-of-the-art Sleep Center. Imaging services include MRI, CT scan, nuclear medicine scans, 4D Ultrasound, cardiac echocardiograms, fluoroscopy, bone density scanning and 3D mammography.

Responsibilities

The Surgical Technician III, under the direct supervision of the direction of the Perioperative Services Director &/or Manager Nursing, accepts overall responsibility for a designated surgical area of specialty. Responsible for assuring all equipment and instruments are operational.  Ensures adequacy and organization of equipment, supplies and instruments.  Knowledgeable regarding service specific equipment and instruments which are out for repair or need replacement.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare operating room and the sterile field for surgical procedures by preparing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely.
  2. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the surgical patient and the patient's surgical.
  3. Maintains sterile field and reports immediately any breaks in aseptic technique.
  4. Pass instruments, suture products, medication, and sponge materials to surgeon.
  5. Assist with retracting of tissue and organs, and suctioning by holding the retracting instrument that has been placed by the surgeon.
  6. Electrosurgical current may be applied as directed by the surgeon.
  7. Assure appropriate equipment and supplies are available for each procedure.
  8. Work closely with the instrument room as service specialist/instrument liaison to assure provision of quality.
  9. Assist in housekeeping duties as directed to ensure a safe patient environment and efficient room turnover.
  10. Work assigned shifts, responding when called upon for additional or emergency service as necessary and on-call according to Perioperative policies.
  11. Actively participate in providing 2 in-services per year at unit or service level. In-services are approved by the Manager prior to presentation.
  12. Attend at least 10 hours of continuing education per year.
  13. Serve as a preceptor for students and new employees and assist in competency assessment as assigned, in accordance with established timeframes.

Qualifications

Education Required
High School Diploma/GED
Preferred
Graduate of an accredited educational program for Sugrical Technologists

 

Licensure/Certifications Required
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST/CSFA) required as of September 1, 2010 or "grandfathered" employees or LVN
BLS for some locations

 

Experience Required

Minimum of five (5) years of recent clinical experience as a certified professional and competency in designated specialties OR three (3) years of recent clinical experience as a certified professional AND completion of an accredited educational program for surgical technologists
