Job Description

Overview

The Senior Manager, Canadian Tax and Special Projects plays a key role in analyzing and determining the Canadian tax implications of transactions involving Canadian entities and their foreign affiliates.

This role requires strong technical expertise combined with project management leadership and directly contributes to value creation and the proactive management of the organization’s tax risks.

Reporting to the Director, Canadian Tax and Special Projects, the incumbent acts as a strategic partner to business teams, supporting them in decision-making processes with tax implications. The role ensures the effective, rigorous, and compliant implementation of tax structures and initiatives in a complex international environment.

In carrying out their responsibilities, the incumbent works closely with the Canadian tax team responsible for compliance and tax provisions, ensuring alignment between tax positions, compliance obligations, and financial impacts.

The Tax team, of which the Senior Manager, Canadian Tax and Special Projects is a member, is based at the company’s head office in Montréal and is part of a global tax function comprising over 40 specialized professionals.

This multidisciplinary team is organized into several areas of expertise (Canadian tax, international tax, transfer pricing, etc.) that collaborate closely. It operates as a true “in-house tax firm,” combining deep technical expertise, collaboration, and close alignment with business operations.

Strategically positioned at the heart of the organization, the AtkinsRéalis tax team plays a critical role in decision-making. It acts as a key business partner, actively contributing to value creation, tax risk management, and the direction of business initiatives both locally and internationally.

Your role

  • Act as a key strategic partner by assessing the Canadian tax implications of various transactions, including:
    • local and international expansion projects;
    • internal reorganizations, including corporate structure optimization (amalgamations, liquidations, dissolutions of Canadian or foreign entities);
    • repatriation of funds (dividends, intercompany loans, cash flow optimization).
      In this capacity, provide recommendations and analyze impacts on tax compliance and tax provisions.
  • Serve as a business partner to internal stakeholders by evaluating tax implications of projects and contributing to the proactive management of tax risks across the organization.
  • Coordinate and oversee international tax compliance activities performed by external advisors, particularly those related to foreign affiliates, including the review of surplus calculations, upstream loans, and foreign accrual property income (FAPI).
  • Manage interactions with tax authorities, including cross-border audits, preparation of required documentation, and participation in discussions and issue resolution.
  • Provide leadership within the team by mentoring members, fostering knowledge transfer, and contributing to the continuous improvement of tax processes (optimization, automation, risk management).

About you

  • More than 5 years of relevant experience in Canadian tax, gained in a professional firm and/or in industry.
  • Advanced tax training (Master’s in Taxation and/or CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Course).
  • Strong professional judgment and the ability to effectively manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong team spirit combined with autonomy, initiative, and a results-oriented mindset.
  • A keen interest in continuous improvement and innovation, with a willingness to challenge existing practices and optimize processes.
  • Excellent command of both French and English, written and spoken, in a professional setting.
  • Excellent writing skills in both French and English, along with strong verbal communication skills in both languages.*

* Member of the Canadian or Global Leadership Team: This position requires knowledge of a language other than French, namely English, as it involves collaboration with members of the Canadian or global leadership team located outside Québec.
