We have an exciting new opportunity for materials scientist / engineer to join Rolls-Royce Submarines in the Materials, Chemistry & Corrosion (MCC) department. MCC supports the entire product lifecycle, from design and manufacture to in-service support for nuclear reactor plant, including materials for vessels, pipework and valves.

We are looking for individuals who are able to deliver large materials development programmes. The successful candidates will have a good understanding of materials science, materials engineering or metallurgy and will be able to apply their technical knowledge to a wide range of problems.

This is a truly unique opportunity to work with a range of unique materials, interact with nuclear design and manufacturing engineers and to deliver innovative and novel solutions to a wide range of nuclear reactor plant engineering problems. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and able to engage at multiple levels across the business.

What we offer

We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing

In this role there will be opportunities to assume a broad range of responsibilities including:

  • Manage and deliver complex materials development programmes through the gated review processes.
  • Effectively engage with engineers from all disciplines to understand material development requirements.
  • Scope, develop and manage test programmes to demonstrate and validate a wide variety of material properties.
  • Manage materials development programmes to meet cost, quality and delivery commitments.
  • Analyse and interpret data from material property testing.
  • Production of design guidance to describe materials performance under a range of complex loading conditions and in different operating environments, based on results from both testing programmes and literature.
  • Knowledge of the properties of stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, low-alloy steels, cobalt-based alloys and/or elastomers are all beneficial. Understanding of advanced manufacturing techniques would also be beneficial.

Who we are looking for:

Previous experience with nuclear materials is not required but would be beneficial.

  • Preferably you will be educated to Degree level or equivalent in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related subject. It is also desirable to have relevant industrial experience in an engineering environment, ideally in relation to materials behaviour.
  • You will be able to communicate effectively in written reports and presentations, to technical and non-technical audiences at all levels.
  • You will have demonstrable experience of producing high quality technical documentation.
  • You will be proficient in the use of standard PC-based software applications.
  • Knowledge of the properties of nuclear fuel and cladding, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, low-alloy steels, cobalt-based alloys and/or elastomers are all beneficial.
  • Understanding of advanced manufacturing techniques would also be beneficial.

We are an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don’t currently already have this in place. Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality. Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.

As part of our selection process, candidates in certain locations may be asked to complete an online assessment, which can include cognitive and behavioural aptitude testing relevant to the role. If required, full instructions for the next steps will be provided.
