Rolls-Royce has a unique opportunity for an Manufacturing Engineer – External Supply Chain in the Future Programmes, Electrical Controls & Instrumentation business unit within our Submarines Business based in Derby.

As an Electrical Manufacturing Engineer - External Supply Chain, you will govern the execution of Manufacturing Engineering activities in the External Supply Chain to assure the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes and/or methods of manufacture which are capable of meeting and continuing to meet business and customer requirements for safety, quality, cost, deliver rate and lead time (SQCD). Ensure product integrity for component or system is delivered through alignment of method of manufacture with design intent by interfacing with the appropriate Design Engineering organisation

What you will be doing:

As Manufacturing Engineer - External Supply Chain, your key accountabilities will include:

  • HSE - Responsible for raising concerns relating to Health, Safety & Environmental Standards in the supplier.
  • Product Safety - Ensure that manufacturing processes are capable of achieving and sustaining the design intent, and that processes are followed so that our products and those of our suppliers conform to their specification. Rigorously raise, investigate, and resolve safety related issues.
  • Quality - Promote a culture of zero defects within the external supply chain. Work with the supplier to "Build in Quality" to reduce risk and drive product Right First Time. Ensure compliance to all relevant company, legislative and technical policies and standards including RRMS, GS3001 and Export Control and Intellectual Property requirements
  • Technical Authority - Ensure application of manufacturing process controls within their area of accountability, with authorisation subject to appropriate delegation, e.g., FAIR, PCA approval.
  • Pre-Contract Activities - Support customers to define technically compliant conformance/performance specifications. Lead technical aspects of pre-contract reviews with both customer & supplier representatives to ensure the technical requirements are fully understood, enabling improved RFT quality of quotations and supply of goods and/or services
  • Planning and Programme Management - Plan and manage activities including schedule, resources, and costs, gaining buy-off and communicating current status to relevant stakeholders. Ensure issues and risks are resolved to meet project timescales. When required prepare, manage & communicate programme status to relevant stakeholders and support supplier management team to track progress of specific programmes or order book.
  • Develop Capability and Continuous Improvement - In collaboration with external supply chain, develop, implement, validate, maintain, and continuously improve manufacturing processes, digital systems and/or methods of manufacture which are capable of meeting and continue to meet requirements for safety, quality, cost, delivery rate and lead time. Capture, analyse and use data to demonstrate and improve the current and future capability of manufacturing processes.
  • Using appropriate tools and methods to identify & document lessons learned from external supply chain delivery programmes, ensuring lessons learned are adopted into future procurement activities and are shared across commodity groups and Design Engineering stakeholders
  • Deploy Capability - Where relevant, review the Technical Package for acceptability. In collaboration with external supply chain, resolve technical issues/problems/arisings related to the production method in a structured way, to requirements for safety, quality, cost, deliver rate and lead-time (SQCD).

  • HNC or degree level education or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Technical experience within an manufacturing environment
  • Applicants will be able to demonstrate a high level of self-motivation, flexibility to operate in a changing manufacturing environment, and the ability to work both individually and as a member of a multi-skilled team.
  • Good understanding of process improvement tools
  • Working knowledge of IPC 610 / 620 standards (Desirable)
  • Working knowledge of key Manufacturing Engineering processes and tools and preferably use and application of GS3001 requirements
  • Experience of technical working with external suppliers, including supplier selection and capability assessments, is advantageous
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, electrical and mechanical drawings, specifications, also product design and introduction experience would be an advantage.
