Job Title: Deterministic Safety Assessment Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity at Rolls-Royce for a Deterministic Safety Assessment Engineer to join our team in Derby.

As a Deterministic Safety Assessment Engineer you will be working on the deterministic safety substantiation of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) for the Astute Class replacement programme known as SSN-AUKUS (SSNA). The Programme is heading towards release to construction in the near future and permitting commissioning over the next decade. The whole programme being part of a national endeavour vital to the security of the nation.

The role covers the full deterministic safety assessment process of hazard identification, screening and assessment, determining initiating event frequencies and product failure frequencies, identifying and assessing faults as well as identifying the corresponding preventative and protective safety measures and operator actions. Hence, working across all systems and functions involved in the design and substantiation of NSRP.

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • Have a technical background at degree level including but not limited to mathematics, physics or any engineering discipline. Training in NSRP provided by Rolls-Royce.
  • Be an excellent communicator who is keen to learn with demonstrable experience working with a wide range of customers and stakeholders throughout a project or product lifecycle. Proven technical report writing skills required.
  • Have a background in deterministic safety, ideally in a highly regulated industry (eg hazard identification and operability assessments like HAZIDs and HAZOPs, hazard logs, fault schedules, substantiating safety functional requirements etc.).
  • Ideally, be familiar with terms like “hierarchy of controls”, “prevention, protection & mitigation” in accident or disaster management as well as “arguments, claims & evidence” when substantiating a design.

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines business an individual has to hold a Security Check clearance.
