Ecologist

ERWM

Department of Natural Resources

Hourly Wage: $28.29/Regular/Full-Time

Location: Yakima


Reports to the ERWM Program Administrator and serves as ERWM lead in survey of ecosystems and assessment of plant, water, soil, and animal samples for the Yakama Nation and within the ceded Yakama territories and within the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Follows direction from and works closely with ERWM management, DNR Administration in protection of the natural environments. Work detail involves a combination of field and lab work and analysis.


Example of Work Performed:

Reports to the ERWM Administrator and assists in ERWM staff in Hanford Nuclear activities requiring field research, collection of data and monitoring of soil, plant, water, animal samples, ecosystems, native wildlife and historical patterns, population number, diet, behavior, habitat use.

Participates in the day-to day work activities related to project requirements at Hanford and educational outreach.

Identifies potential project goals and priorities for management and elected official approval.

Works collaboratively with ERWM staff.

Through established Chain of Command, prepares and provides reports both written and oral, committee actions, for actions taken and decisions and approvals necessary.

Delivers presentations, participates in forums, and shares expertise and makes recommendations.

Provides weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports that effectively track the completion of project tasks and are deliverable.

Use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to collect and process data for the purposes of documentation, reporting and presentation.

Research and development of data to study historical patterns, diet, behavior, population numbers and habitat use.

Work consists of conducting scientific investigations, classification of organisms, plants, animals, and assistance in identification of contaminants.

Participates with ERWM staff in continuous cleanup and restoration actions at Hanford and considers Yakama Nation Treaty reserved cultural resources.

Conducts research to expand biological control knowledge and effects of pollutant contaminants released into the atmosphere on wildlife and vegetation at identified Hanford locations.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of Yakama Nation's Treaty and treaty rights.

Knowledge of Tribal, State and Federal Indian Law.

Knowledge of history of Yakama Nation and Hanford Reservation and Yakama Nation resources.

Knowledge of laws, regulations policies & guidance related directly to Hanford and the cleanup of radioactive hazardous waste sites in WA and Oregon.

Knowledge and experience working on complex cleanup sites with radioactive waste cleanup.

Knowledge and experience with developing reports, delivering presentations, participating on technical forums, and sharing expertise.

Knowledge and experience with maintaining records and official documentation.

Knowledge of reviewing technical and regulatory documents pertaining to NRIA and NRDA and precursor.

Knowledge of federal and state laws, policies and best management practices that apply to Hanford.

Knowledge and experience with conducting literature, research and reviews and managing administrative records.

Skills to reach a wide range of audiences and technical writing and editing.

Ability to conduct research and maintain ongoing project deadlines to meet reporting requirements.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of culturally sensitive information.


Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, geography, computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics and calculus or related field.

Five years of professional work experience as an environmental professional responsible for NRDA and or hazardous radioactive waste site cleanup and restoration.

Ability to obtain a DOE Hanford Site access badge.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.


Preferred Requirements:

Master's Degree in chemistry, biology, computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics and calculus or related field.
