Duties & Responsibilities

The candidate must be able to competently perform routine and specialised PET/CT imaging and produce quality images for physicians and radiologists to diagnose, treat, monitor, and prevent injury or disease. Works independently, exercising sound judgment and developing clinical skills to execute safe and precise procedures to deliver accurate results in a timely manner. Gains cooperation from the patient, their family/support group, and other healthcare providers by showing empathy, competent patient assessment, attentive monitoring, and effective communication. Adheres to all radiation regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for obtaining patients' histories from electronic records, patient interviews, dictated reports, communicating with referring clinicians, and subsequently compiling comprehensive interpretive reports of findings.

Responsible for operating relevant equipment required to facilitate imaging within the PET/CT department.

Their role also involves interacting with patients to offer them psychological support and reassurance. Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT) are required to position patients for imaging correctly.

The NMT explains to the patient the details of a radiographic procedure and provides answers to their questions, which don’t include a diagnosis.

They set accurate radiation levels in accordance with established standards.

Responsible for obtaining patient consent prior to radiopharmaceutical administration and diagnostic imaging (when it is an invasive or contrast-related procedure).

Administrative tasks:

  1. Performs general clerical tasks, such as answering phones, updating patient appointments, retrieving, entering, and revising patient electronic records.
  2. Able to read, understand and interpret request forms from referring doctors.
  3. Responsible for scheduling appointments; this includes liaising with the referring doctors and ward matrons regarding patients who are hospitalised.
  4. Responding to queries via email and WhatsApp.
  5. Obtaining medical aid authorisations for patients.
  6. Ensure that the patient’s medical histories are typed and the relevant required documentation is presented to the radiologist and nuclear physician prior to scanning.
  7. Ordering of radiopharmaceuticals from offsite laboratories as well as receiving early morning phone calls for rescheduling/cancellation of doses.
  8. Timeously communication production failures with staff & patients.
  9. Inventories and orders of supplies periodically to maintain established stock levels.
  10. Ensuring that PET/CT scan reports and Images are released to referring doctors timeously.

 

Imaging Tasks

  1. Explain to the patient the procedure, administration of medications or contrast media, and the associated biological effects in a clear and professional manner to alleviate fear and anxiety.
  2. Obtains informed consent from all patients.
  3. Performs PET/CT scans, which require a sound understanding of anatomical positioning, human physiology, and equipment.
  4. Safely operates diagnostic equipment.
  5. Ensures that all scans are completed in accordance with department protocol and within established time frames.
  6. Adheres to all radiation protection rules and regulations whilst working in the hot lab.
  7. Preparation, assaying and administration of radiopharmaceuticals.

 

Quality Control

  1. Inspects and calibrates equipment accordingly for proper operation and records the quality control (QC) results, reporting any malfunctions to the supervisor.
  2. Must obtain QC results from the relevant radiopharmacy prior to radiopharmaceutical administration.

 

Safety

  1. Implements protection devices and safety standards to minimise radiation exposure (as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) to self, staff and patients.
  2. Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment after each procedure.

 

Compliance

  1. Maintains strictest confidence of all patient health information in compliance with POPIA.
  2. Complies with departmental standards, policies, procedures, and South African radiation regulations to produce high-quality PET/CT scans.
  3. Prepares, administers, and documents medications and contrast media in accordance with departmental protocol.
  4. Retains certification and completes mandated continuing professional education requirements to meet facility and regulatory accreditation and licensure requirements.

Desired Experience & Qualification

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

  • Preferred: Certified Dual-qualified Diagnostic and Nuclear Medicine Technologist with PET/CT experience.
  • If NMT has a single qualification only (Nuclear Medicine), then the candidate must have CT training.
  • Registration with HPCSA
  • Previous experience as a CT/PET Radiographer is essential.
  • Capacity to implement and maintain health practice standards required by accredited bodies and appropriate health legislation.
  • At least two year’s experience as a PET/CT Radiographer.

 

KNOWLEDGE

Ability to set high-performance standards for self and others and assume overall responsibility and accountability for completing assignments or tasks.
