An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Materials Engineer – Surface Engineering & Fluids to join the Surface Engineering & Fluids team within ET&S, based in Derby.
As a Materials Engineer – Surface Engineering & Fluids, you will be responsible for the delivery of technical programmes covering the full product lifecycle (including research and development, design, new product introduction, manufacture and in-service support). Externally to Rolls-Royce you will also manage effective working relationships with our suppliers, supply chain partners and University Technology Centres.
You will be highly motivated, ensure the delivery of technical services and the development of advanced methods, processes and skills with a strong focus on Cost, Customer, Quality and Delivery.

What you will be doing
With this attractive opportunity you will get a chance to resolve problems through evaluative judgements, analyse factual information from multiple sources, interpret results and identify effective solutions by applying your own technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.
You will also:
Be responsible for defined technical packages of work providing leadership and delivery against programme milestones within agreed costs, timescales and quality requirements.
Be a point of contact within Materials Engineering and to share subject matter knowledge across the function. This may include providing advisory services to designated customers, influencing their peer group, representing senior departmental staff and acting as advisor / coach on matters where they are technically authoritative.
Work with suppliers to support process/material substantiation, qualification and troubleshooting
Develop robust specifications for the deployment of processes in the supply chain cognisant of design requirements.
Develop new materials technologies and processes.
Manage your workload and timely delivery of key objectives.
Understand company business objectives and ensure that the work they do supports this; To act in accordance with both the company values and those associated with being a professional engineer.

To be successful in this role you will need:
Qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in a relevant Engineering or Chemistry discipline, or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
Technical experience relevant to Surface Engineering and/or Fluids technology.
Knowledge of manufacturing laboratory-based practices, techniques, and characterisation methods, including practical experience optical and electron microscopy.
Experience (including some practical) of different coating processes and/or fluids technology.
Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and certification frameworks.
Excellent analytical skills and ability to communicate effectively in both written reports and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences at all levels.
An ability to apply logical, analytical, and innovative thinking to a range of technical problems.
Membership in a relevant professional body appropriate to the region. In the UK - attained / working towards Chartered status is preferred.
Ideally have experience, though not essential, with ceramic materials and coatings, including thermal barrier coatings for the protection of metallic components and environmental barrier coatings to protect ceramic matrix composite components.
Ideally have experience, though not essential, of thermal spray processes and robotic handling equipment with a working knowledge of IRC5 language.
This role will require occasional travel to supplier sites and other Rolls-Royce manufacturing sites.
